MIRANHSHAH, 5 May 2007 — Suspected Al-Qaeda-linked militants wounded eight Pakistani soldiers in a grenade attack on a military convoy passing through a tribal region near the Afghan border yesterday, officials said.

The grenade was thrown at one of the vehicles near the town of Mir Ali in the North Waziristan region. “Eight soldiers have been wounded in the grenade attack, three of them seriously,” military spokesman Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad told Reuters.

In a separate incident in Charsadda, suspected militants targeted music shops with explosive devices overnight, damaging a dozen outlets, police said yesterday.

The shops were closed when the crude homemade devices exploded at three markets late Thursday. District Police Officer Feroz Shah told Arab News, the first blast took place at Tangi village while the second bomb went off on the Charsadda Mall Road.

Local trade leaders said they received letters last week, attributed to local Taleban, warning them to stop selling music and video CDs because they considered them to be repugnant to the teachings of Islam.

In a separate incident, masked gunmen shot dead the driver of the political agent of North Waziristan.
