JEDDAH, 4 June 2007 — Jeddah United Sports Company (JUSC) organized a Milk & Honey basketball tournament. The objective of the tournament was to promote sports, sportsmanship and above all promote milk and honey as an energy drink rather than the unhealthy high caffeine drinks that kids are starting to consume.
The junior girls formed 6 different teams in two divisions. The ceremony started with the girls lining up and singing the Saudi national anthem. After that, the girls recited a semi-Olympic oath after referee Sherry Nasseif. The oath was as follows “I promise that I will try my best in this tournament. I promise to play fair and to respect the decisions of the referees, the officials and the coaches. I promise to play with respect to my competitors, my teammates and to basketball.” Al-Shifa sponsored the event for the Jeddah United Junior girls division. Fathers and mothers attended the event and cheered for their loved ones. Nada company distributed milk and yoghurt to the players and the audience. The yellow team consisting of Ayah Farsi, Shahad Bakashwain, Shahad Al-Solaiman, Lujain Qabbani, Leena Zaini and Raneem Albakri won the senior girls tournament. The junior girls crown went to the team of Talah Abu alhasan, Saja Bundugji, Mariam Alghamdi, Joud Moumina, Haifa Abdulgaffar, Sara Bakur.
Second place winners: Haifa Alhozan, Lina Hareeri, Dima Fatany, Dalal Althagafy,
Dania Alwasia and Reema Abdulgaffar.
Junior MVPs of the tournament were Leena Hareeri, Haifa Alhozan, and Saja Bunduji, while the senior division MVPs were Shahad Bakashwain, Makia Alghamdi, Hala Alothman and Dina Hawandagi.
The coaches of the girls teams are Karin Al Ghamdi, Laila Mukayis, and Marwa Ashrour. Marwan Asaad and Abdullah Asaad did the score keeping and the table officials were Maha Bin Laden, Dania Almaeena and Sara Almaeena. Head coach Umar Abdulsalam was the MC of the event and coach Ameen Bahartha refereed the games along with Sherry Nasseif.
Coaches Karen Alghamdi and Marwa Ashrour distributed the gifts to the winning teams. Lina Almaeena, director of JUSC and captain of the women’s basketball division, thanked Samer Kurdi, deputy general manager of Al-Sunbula group, for sponsoring the tournament. Al-Shifa which is one of the brands of Al-Sunbula group is 100% pure honey that gives energy especially to athletic and active youth. Ashraf Kabli, the corporate marketing manager, said that the company was glad to support an event as part of the corporate social responsibility. Alaa Sharaf, the marketing manager of Motion stores, distributed beautiful sports gifts to the winning teams. The Jeddah United Sports Company team hopes that this annual event promoting milk and honey as an energy drink, will promote healthy lifestyles, especially in these girls’ bone-building years.
