RIYADH, 9 June 2007 — Dr. Abdul Shukkoor, an oncologist at King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Center in Jeddah, has cautioned the public against increasing cancer cases in the world. “One out of four persons is likely to become a cancer patient,” he said, quoting latest studies. However, he pointed out that cancer is no more an incurable disease.
Addressing a cancer awareness program organized by the Indian Cultural Congress in Riyadh, Shukkoor said smoking, unhealthy lifestyle, atmospheric pollution, use of junk foods, exposure to toxic gases and chemicals and exposure to sun in the peak hours when the ultra violet rays are very strong, are some of the reasons for the growing number of cancer cases.
He emphasized the importance of joining health insurance schemes in order to cover the expenses of cancer diagnosis and treatment, estimated at nearly SR400,000.
“About 70 percent of cancer patients come to hospital for diagnosis and treatment after the disease has reached its advanced stage, thus making the treatment difficult,” he said.
Shukkoor underlined the need for creating support groups among cancer-afflicted persons in order to share their experiences and concerns. It has been decided to distribute CDs to promote public awareness about cancer. The program attracted a large number of Keralite expatriates in the city.
Ahraf Vadakkevila presided over the event, which was opened by Former Education Minister of Kerala Nalakath Soopy. Professor M.C. Sebastian, principal of Al-Yasmin International School, also addressed the program. Ashraf Ponnani welcomed the guests while Sainul Abdeen Parayil gave a vote of thanks.
