Saudi Spikers Get Ready for Asian Cup

JEDDAH, 3 July 2007 — The Saudi national volleyball team wind up their five days training camp in Riyadh tomorrow. They then will continue training in Taif from July 5 to 25, return to Riyadh for a three-day stopover before flying to Serbia and Hungary for another training camp from Aug. 1 to 25 in preparation for the 14th Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship to be held in Jakarta, Indonesia from Sep. 1 to 9. The event attracted 17 teams namely Qatar, Maldives, Taipei, Japan, Iran, Pakistan, Vietnam, China, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Korea, India, Kazakhstan, UAE, Australia and hosts Indonesia. The Saudi team will be accompanied by team manager Saleh Al-Qasem and Serbian coach Radoslav Svircev.

Saudi-Lanka Davis Cup Tie

JEDDAH, 3 July 2007 — Sri Lanka will host Saudi Arabia in the Davis Cup Group III Asia-Oceania Zone tie scheduled for July 17 to 22. In preparation for this event the Kingdom team are in training camp in Spain at the Catalonia Academy. The players are Fahd Al-Saad, Omar Al-Thagib, Salih Al-Rajih and Thamir Intabi. Tawfeig Mouafa is the national coach and Ahmed Al-Aloula head of delegation. Meanwhile, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals are to host the training camp for the youth under-12 and under-14 in Dammam. The training camp precedes their participation in 16th Arab Tennis Championship for youth to be held in Tunis from July 16 to 21.

Al-Sibyani 2nd in Finland Meet

JEDDAH, 3 July 2007 — Saudi runner Ismael Al-Sibyani placed second on Sunday in the 400 meters after clocking 47.22 sec in the annual athletics International Meeting held in Turku, Finland. Younis Hawasawi followed his teammate to finish third clocking 47.78 sec. Salim Al-Yami too participated and set his best record this year after being injured when he won the 100 meters in 10.50 sec. Adil Aseeri clinched first place in the 200 meters after finishing the race in 22.36 sec while Moussa Hawasawi placed third in 22.58 sec.

Al-Ahli U-13 Football Team

JEDDAH, 3 July 2007 — Al-Ahli under-13 football team are returning today from Europe where they represented Saudi Arabia for the first time in the Danone Nations Cup in Lyon, France. The tournament staged June 29 to July 2 attracted teams from 39 countries. The Ahli team ranked 28th after the eight games they played in the first round against Spain, Holland, Russia, and Namibia, and then in the second round against Italy, Vanotti Islands, Algeria, and Holland at the Gerland Stadium. According to Ayman Fadil, head of the Saudi delegation there, this event has brought many positive results for the team. He said it helped them enrich their experiences through meeting and competing with strong international teams during the event and during the five days training camp before it in Paris.
