DUBAI, 18 September 2007 — While we do our best to make CompuNet a good read each week, the pages are much more than that. The products, software and solutions presented in CompuNet are usually new to the Saudi market and the companies that are making these technologies available are often looking for local distributors or integrators. I regularly get e-mails from individuals and companies in the Kingdom curious to know further details about the technologies shown in CompuNet and it’s really exciting when I hear that new tech channels have opened in the Kingdom thanks to an idea that began on these pages.
Even if you aren’t interested in getting into the business side of tech, these pages should be an inspiration to you. In fact, they might even change your life in some small way, if you take a chance and use one of the new technologies highlighted here. Over the years that has happened to me. Back in 1999 on assignment, I went to the IT trade show COMDEX in Las Vegas and investigated digital cameras. I brought one back to try. At that time, newspapers in the Kingdom took photos with film. Although many of my colleagues were skeptical concerning the quality of the images that an amateur like myself could produce with a digital camera, it soon became apparent that the digital camera enabled me to compete even with photographers who had years of experience in the field.
Yes, CompuNet is about technology, but that isn’t just buzzes and beeps. It can be about learning to use old tech in new ways or to enhance what is already commonplace. Don’t believe me? Just look at Kableflags, which we are featuring in Cool Tools today. Any of us could have invented Kableflags, the concept is so simple — but we didn’t. At least now though, someone here can contact the company in Australia and bring this useful product into the Kingdom. If that isn’t you or your company, don’t despair. The next great idea will be on these pages in a week.
