MUMBAI, 21 September 2007 — Bollywood actor Salman Khan is once again caught in a controversy after a fatwa (religious edict) was issued on Wednesday by Mufti Fakir Qadri Mohammed Farouq Gafartulla of Darool Ifta Manzar E Islam of Bareilly, in Western Indian sate of Uttar Pradesh, which, effective immediately, declares that Salman Khan, his wife, parents, brothers and sister-in-laws are non-Muslims.
This fatwa was issued after Salman Khan and his family members were shown on TV placing the Hindu elephant deity in their house and worshipping it. Later Khan family members were seen leading the immersion procession of the Hindu deity, dancing and singing Hindu hymns.
According to the fatwa, Salman Khan and his family members would have to recite the Shahadah (a declaration stating that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammed (pbuh) is his messenger) and would also have to seek Allah’s forgiveness and promise not to repeat the offense in order to become Muslims again.
Mufti Fakir Qadri further added in the fatwa that if the male members of the Khan family are married, their actions invalidated their marriages and they should re-marry after they repent.
