JEDDAH, 22 September 2007 — Homeopathy is a fast developing alternative medicine in Kerala. Homeopaths believe that the imbalance in the body’s vital force is the main reason for diseases and claim that homeopathic treatment can harmonize and re-balance the vital force, so restoring health.
Dr. Ajay Kumar Babu is one of the famous homeopaths in Calicut. Many patients suffering from chronic diseases have been cured as a result of his diagnosis and treatment.
According to Babu, homeopathy offers effective medicine without side effects to cure diseases such as cancers, rheumatoid arthritis, tumors, chronic allergies, skin conditions and muscular disorders. Homeopaths successfully treat acute cases of seasonal disorders, childhood disorders, injuries, etc. as well as chronic and terminal disorders.
“The treatment system in homeopathy is entirely different from that of allopathic treatment,” Babu told Arab News. “In homeopathy a doctor prescribes medicine after thoroughly studying the patient and symptoms of his disease. A doctor should be able to feel the pain and suffering of his patients and should have a strong desire to cure their diseases. This will certainly help him make proper diagnosis and select the most suitable medicine.”
Babu has taken his medical profession as a service to humanity and God.
“If a patient enters my room, I approach him with the earnest desire of curing his disease,” said the doctor whose house is located in Karaparamba, a ten-minute drive from downtown Calicut.
There is a general notion that homeopathy does not provide quick relief to all diseases. “This is wrong. But finding quick cure depends on the doctor’s efficiency and his ability to select the right medicine,” he said. “Some inefficient homeopaths will take months to give the right medicine to their patients,” Babu said.
“Good homeopaths will first learn from the patient the complete history of the disorder. They will take a good look at the investigations that were done and the treatment prescribed, and then ascertain whether the patient can be treated with homeopathy alone, or if they should be advised to use homeopathic medicines along with other medicines,” he added. “In homeopathy, there are no fixed rules for describing a particular ‘plan of treatment’ for a particular disorder. The doctor will prescribe medicine based on the totality of the presenting symptoms and then will fine-tune and adjust according to changes reported by the patient. A doctor will also take into consideration a patient’s mental condition as well as his family background,” Babu said. “We are treating the causes of a particular disease, not the disease itself,” he said.
For Babu it was a childhood dream to become a good homeopath and he says he owes his success to his parents who supported and encouraged him.
“Homeopathy follows a holistic approach in treatment as a homeopath studies not only the disease but also the entire life history and lifestyle of a patient,” he said. “A successful doctor must be able to activate a patient’s vital power to cure his disease,” he added.
Babu has conducted a lot of research on treatment of cancer through homeopathy. “During my school days I used to ask why cancer remains an incurable disease after seeing my grandma suffering from the disease.
She used to say that ‘I would not agree for radiation therapy even if they kill me.’ Her cries still ring in my ears and that encouraged me to find a cure for cancer.”
With the help of God, Babu has succeeded in successfully treating many cancer patients in the state, including some who had reached advanced stages.
Babu has strong faith in God and believes that God is the one who cures a disease. “A person will die at the time fixed by God,” he said.
“There is no doubt about that. But if God wishes to extend one’s life, he can be cured through my treatment. I believe that I am able to prescribe the right medicine for a disease because of the blessings and mercy of God. God gives us that ability when we are ready to serve a patient sincerely and wholeheartedly.”
Babu said diseases were increasing among the people of Kerala as their immune system has been weakened as a result of modern lifestyle, unhygienic food, tension, pollution and a large intake of medicine and toxic foodstuffs.
“We should conduct research on the effect different medicines and vaccines have on human bodies and develop a new medical outlook,” he said.
Babu has observed two main reasons for homeopathy’s lack of popularity. First, it lacks business interests. Unlike allopathy, it does not have many pharmaceutical companies to conduct research and produce different medicines. If more people use homeopathic medicine it will certainly become successful.
The quantity of medicine applied is very small and this will not encourage businessmen to invest in this medicine. Moreover, people go for homeopathy only after conventional medicine fails to cure their diseases. Secondly, there is lack of efficient homeopaths.
While teaching at Homeopathy College in Calicut, Babu studies for a master’s degree in psychology at Ambedkar University.
He is author of three books and two of them are being printed. He also intends to open his clinics in the Gulf countries as a large number of his patients work in this region.
Unlike other doctors Babu does not have a name board at the gate of his house. But a large number of people patiently wait there for several hours every day to receive medicines and advice.
