MUMBAI, 28 March 2008 — The Maharashtra Assembly yesterday sentenced the state’s chief election commissioner, Nandlal, to two days of imprisonment on the charge of a breach of privilege. Nandlal illegally issued a notification changing the existing law on election of local bodies, thereby subverting the constitution. Congress legislator Janardhan Chandurkar moved a breach of privilege motion against Nandlal in March 2006 in the assembly. Congress legislator from Pune and Chairman of the House Privileges Committee Chandrakant Chajjed recommended seven days of imprisonment, but this was reduced to two days on the request of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. Soon after the sentence was pronounced, Nandlal was arrested and taken to the high security Arthur Road prison to serve his term.
