DUBAI, 11 April 2008 — Police arrested an Iranian couple who stole a diamond ring from a shop in the posh Madinat Jumeirah hotel here. According to police, when the couple told a jeweler that they have decided to buy a ring that was worth half a million dirhams. The jeweler put it in a box and handed to the man. The Iranian returned the box a few minutes later saying that he would come back after collecting money from his sister who was in another shop. His accomplice remained in the shop but slipped away unnoticed when the jeweler got distracted by other customers. When the customer did not return the jeweler decided to keep the ring back but found the box empty. He called the police who identified the couple using footage from CCT cameras. They were arrested in a hotel in Deira area. Police said the man had previously been deported for a similar offense.
