Filipino Maid Murdered in Kuwait

MANILA, 24 May 2008 — A Filipino maid was murdered in Kuwait, Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Ricardo Endaya reported to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) yesterday.

The DFA press statement said that overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Fatima Sagadan Maulana was found dead in Kabd Desert last May 16.

DFA further reported that she hails from Carmen, Cotabato and was deployed to Kuwait as a household service worker.

Kuwaiti police authorities, according to the press statement, declared that Maulana was probably murdered on May 9. Her body was found a week later and was already in a decomposing state.

Contrary to reports that appeared earlier in Kuwaiti news media, Kuwaiti police authorities said that the assailant had not burned the victim’s body.

The principal suspect in the murder of OFW Maulana has already been arrested and charges have filed against him, the statement further said.

Separately, five Outstanding Filipinos have been chosen in Timor-Leste, in celebration of the forthcoming 110th anniversary of Philippine Independence on June 12, a DFA report said.

Jovita Jane Bascos Revilla, MD, FPOGS, Fr. Rolando Florencio Fernandez Fernandez, SDB, Annabelle Guerra Cajita, Lito Aplasca Granada, and Roque Sanque Mazaredo will be honored during the Gabi ng Parangal (Philippine Night) to be held on 07 June 2008 at the Salao Delta Nova, Comoro, Dili.

The outstanding Filipinos have shown exemplary character, distinguished themselves in their respective fields, and made positive contributions to the development of Timor-Leste, according to the Association of Filipinos in East Timor that spearheaded the awards with the cooperation of the Philippine Embassy in Dili.

The awardees were nominated by fellow Filipinos in Timor-Leste and were selected by a committee composed of Fr. Alan Bondon, SVD as Chairman;and Oscar Hernandez, Mylene Tamondong, Reynald Enduma, Sister Clare Garcillano, SPC, Rowena Fernandez, and Mary Ann Maglipon as members.
