JEDDAH: Police are investigating a case concerning a father who allegedly “kidnapped” his newborn baby from the King Abdul Aziz Hospital here recently.

“A woman has complained that her husband kidnapped her baby from the hospital’s neonatal unit while she was asleep in her room,” said Lt. Nawaf Al-Bouq, spokesman for Jeddah police.

“The man told a nurse at the neonatal center that he wanted to show the baby to his grandmother who was waiting with the baby’s mother. The man then left the hospital with the baby without informing anyone,” said Al-Bouq.

He said the couple had a quarrel before and that the man, who used to work as a security guard at the hospital, left the hospital through a rear exit. In her complaint the mother also spoke against the negligence of hospital staff.

“The man’s action cannot be considered a crime as he is the baby’s father. However, he will be summoned to explain it,” said Al-Bouq.
