KOLKATA: Indian industrialist Krishna Kumar Birla, whose business empire spanned sugar, fertilizer, heavy engineering, shipping and newspaper publishing, has died, said a family spokeswoman. He was 89. Keya Sengupta said ailments related to old age caused Birla’s death at home yesterday.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Birla ranked “among the greatest industrial leaders that India has produced.” Birla owned The Hindustan Times, a New Delhi-based newspaper. Birla also was a lawmaker representing the governing Congress party in India’s Parliament for 18 years.
