ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Geelani told the National Assembly yesterday, “the government has no plans to reopen new cases against Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Nawaz Sharif.”
Giving a policy statement on the floor of the house, the prime minister said that National Accountable Bureau (NABP has requested a link court for reopening of cases on which it has no jurisdiction for proceedings. He categorically said that no case is being pursued against the PML (N) leaders.
The prime minister said that the federal government has established a Cabinet committee to repeal the NAB ordinance, which at present could not be done as it had the protection of the 6th Schedule of the constitution.
These cases, he added, would be dealt by the ordinary courts under the supervision of the High Courts. He said fresh legislation will be brought in the house for ensuring transparency and across-the-board accountability.
Reacting to the prime minister’s statement, PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal said there is no difference in NAB or PCO judges till the restoration of deposed judges. He said the oath of new president, would also be doubtful and asked the government to restore judiciary to its pre-Nov. 3 position.
Meanwhile, co-chairman of Pakistan People’s Party and presidential candidate Asif Ali Zardari has said the independent judiciary would be reinstated.
In a column written in a foreign daily newspaper, Zardari said: “We will support US and other allies in their efforts in war on terror.”
He said “the government would not allow anyone to use its land for terrorist activities,” saying that terrorists would be defeated.
