DAMMAM: Police in the Eastern Province city of Qatif arrested yesterday a Saudi man on charges of robbing a number of Asian laborers after posing as a police officer.
According to officials, the 35-year-old man dressed in a police uniform entered an apartment where an unreported number of Asian workers live and robbed them of money and other valuables, including mobile phones.
The incident took place at the Safa neighborhood of Qatif.
Eastern Province police spokesman Brig. Yusuf Al-Qahtani said the man then calmly left the Asian men, who at the time thought he was a real policeman.
This, however, did not stop the robbed workers from immediately complaining to the local police and gave them a description of the man.
The workers said the man threatened to arrest and deport them if they did not give him all the money in their possession.
The police immediately alerted security checkpoints in the neighboring districts. Police patrols were also looking for the man.
The Jubail police later arrested a suspect who allegedly confessed that he often posed as a policeman and took money from expatriate workers.
