JEDDAH: Municipal officials in Jeddah are currently preparing five major studies to install floodwater drainage lines in residential districts around the city.
Mohammed Ashour, head of the Studies and Supervision Department of the municipality, said the task was given to specialized major consultancy companies to provide the exact needs and priority locations for initiating the projects. He did not name the companies involved.
The project will cover the northern Obhur, the old airport area, Azizia and Jameah districts, downtown and some unzoned residential areas in the southern part of the city, he said.
Ashour said the study also includes finding solutions for damages caused by lack of proper drainage.
Groundwater drainage plans, which were recently completed, have identified five areas according to priority. The first phase of the plan covers Petromin and Ghulail areas, which are the most affected southern districts because of inadequate drainage.
Ashour said the municipality was also finalizing a technical study to design irrigation networks for public parks and traffic islands. The study aims at finalizing an automatic irrigation system that uses treated sewage instead of using water trucks for the purpose.
