JEDDAH: A Saudi real estate company announced yesterday that it would build 300 houses and 30 mosques in the Gaza Strip in response to a call by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to support Palestinians in the war-torn territory.

Sumu Real Estate Company said it had informed the King Abdullah Campaign to Support Palestinians in Gaza that it would meet the expenses of building 300 housing units and 30 mosques in various parts of the territory.

The Saudi company’s decision reflects the tremendous support received by the campaign from Saudi businessmen and philanthropists. The nationwide campaign has so far received more than SR216.2 million in cash.

A report issued by the campaign committee said it was sending relief supplies to Gaza in coordination with World Food Programme, Doctors Sans Frontiers and UNRWA.

“The first phase of the relief program has cost SR63 million,” the report said, adding that the supplies included foodstuffs and medicine and medical appliances.

“We are now working on the second phase of the program and have started dispatching more truckloads of relief supplies to Gaza through Egypt,” the committee said. The report said Gazans were in dire need of relief supplies as a result of the devastating Israeli war and prolonged economic blockade.

Palestinian Health Minister Dr. Fathi Abu Moghli praised the Al-Aqsa Fund, which is managed by the Islamic Development Bank, for its support to the Palestinian resistance in Gaza. The fund sent emergency relief worth $500,000.
