KUWAIT CITY: Emir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah yesterday accepted the resignation of the Kuwaiti government, reports on state television said yesterday.
“The emir accepted the government’s resignation and asked it to continue in a caretaker capacity,” the television said in a detailed report.
The resignation came after five Islamist members of Parliament submitted requests to question Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, a nephew of the emir.
The MPs accused the premier of mismanagement, breach of the constitution and failure to adopt a prudent economic policy, besides misuse of public funds.
Sheikh Nasser has been under constant political pressure since he became premier in February 2006. He was forced to resign four times and reshuffle his Cabinets on two other occasions.
The most recent of his five Cabinets was appointed in January.
The grillings also fueled speculation of an imminent decision by the emir to dissolve parliament, elected only in May last year, and call for fresh polls within two months.
Parliament has been dissolved twice since March 2006.
