DUBAI: Turbulent weather in the UAE has caused a jump in fatalities with more than 10 people dead in the past two days as a result of heavy rains and wind.
With the metrological office forecasting more heavy rain till Wednesday, police urged motorists to be extra vigilant. Roads in the northern emirates, especially Sharjah, have been flooded causing traffic jams. Car pile-ups caused by slippery roads have added to the misery of motorists.
Sharjah saw a hailstorm on Friday night and heavy to medium rainfall on Saturday and Sunday. Schools reported low attendance as parents kept children at home. Fujairah and its surrounding areas saw from late Saturday evening to Sunday morning light to medium rainfall, while other areas along the coast witnessed heavy downpour, flooding valleys (wadis), farmlands and low lands in affected areas.
In Dubai, police said that 10 people were killed in road accidents in the last two days alone. In one of the accidents, a pedestrian was killed after one of three cars involved in a pileup veered off the road and slammed into him. The pedestrian and two other motorists died on the spot.
