NEW DELHI: The death of 17-year-old schoolgirl, Aakriti Bhatia in the premises of Modern School in Vasant Vihar, one of the leading schools in capital city, on Monday has fueled a strong protest from parents and students.
Accusing the school of negligence, they gathered at the school yesterday demanding resignation of the principal Goldy Malhotra. Aakriti, an asthmatic patient, complained to her teacher about feeling unwell. Initially, her complaint was ignored.
Later, however, as her conditioned deteriorated, she was put on oxygen in the school’s sports room. She was taken to the hospital, where the doctors declared as “brought dead.”
The parents and students are angry at the school authorities’ failure to take timely action, which led to Aakriti’s death.
There was a mild scuffle also yesterday between Aakriti’s mother and Malhotra, as parents supported by students blamed school authorities for her death.
Parents and fellow students of Aakriti disrupted a press conference organized by school authorities to clarify their stand on the issue.
Shouting slogans, the parents and the students surrounded the principal and demanded her dismissal.
In an attempt to pacify agitated protesters, school Managing Trustee Ashok Pratap Singh said that an inquiry would be ordered to find out if there was any lapse on part of the school. The inquiry committee would include people from outside the school also and submit its report as soon as possible, Singh said.
