JEDDAH: Germany, which had suspended its consular services in Jeddah a few years ago, plans to resume them once its consulate building project is completed.

“Efforts for the construction of a new consulate building are well under way and with its completion we will resume offering full consular services,” said German Consul General Dr. Michael Zickerick at a reception hosted to mark German National Day at the Jeddah Hilton on Saturday.

Muhammad A. Tayeb, Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ director general for the Makkah region, was the chief guest. A large number of officials, diplomats, businessmen and community members also took part in the celebration.

Tayeb described bilateral relations as strong and hoped that the Kingdom’s buoyant economy, ongoing new city and other projects would bring the two countries closer.

Referring to the “exciting and booming region” despite the worldwide economic slowdown, Zickerick said projects like the new economic cities were providing a great opportunity for overseas investors and businessmen.

“Projects like the King Abdullah Economic City, and the King Abdullah University for Science and Technology reflect the exciting and booming period of the Kingdom as well as the region.

“After only two years of construction, KAUST opened recently, thus demonstrating the resolve of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah to lead this great nation forward,” he said.

“This is also the reason why Germany is determined to maintain and increase its presence in this dynamic city,” he added.
