The 50-strong Salam sports team is riding sports cars and motorbikes as part of the Zahrah Breast Cancer Society’s “One Million and One Flowers” program, which is being held with the support of Roche International.
The program will also collect donations to set up three mobile clinics to detect breast cancer across the country free of charge. “The team has covered the distance from Riyadh to Jeddah crossing Al-Kharj, Wadi Al-Dawasser, Abha, Baha, Taif and Makkah and will visit 11 more cities before returning to Riyadh,” said Ahmad Hilmi, commander of the team.
Hilmi said the team is riding motorbikes, as they are popular among all sections of people. He added that the team has come to Jeddah at this time of the year because of the large number of people who visit Jeddah during the mid-year school vacation.
Suhaib Samman, captain of the Zahrah team participating in the tour, said, “We aim to spread awareness among people about the importance of preventing breast cancer at an early stage and support medical establishments in their fight against cancer. We also want to ensure the success of the Million and One Flower Program. We hope every charitable person will support the program.” The program got a shot in the arm when Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh, issued a statement approving the donations to it. The Ministry of Social Affairs has also given permission for the project. The three mobile clinics are expected to examine 4,800 women a year and 24,000 in five years.
