Spokesperson Maj. Sami Al-Shwaerikh ruled out the possibility that John Currie, the Briton who worked for BAE Systems, was “deliberately” run down as reported by a British newspaper.
“It was an unfortunate road accident with no criminal activity behind it,” said Al–Shwaerikh.
He added that the recklessness of the youth, who is in his 20s, was the main reason behind the accident. According to reports, 45-year-old Currie and three other cyclists were cut off by local youths driving in two cars on a main road on the outskirts of Riyadh on Feb. 25.
The Sunday Telegraph in the UK reported that one of the vehicles clipped one of the cyclists, causing him to fall off his bike, then allegedly turned around and drove straight into them.
Currie was said to have smashed against the vehicle’s windscreen, and he later died from his injuries.
Arab News reported on Monday that sources at the British Embassy in Riyadh had already ruled out any foul play.
