Two of the women are contesting for the Real Estate and Urban Development Committee while the other woman wants to be elected to the Contractors and Concrete Committee. Out of 45 committees, 11 — including the two committees that have women contestants — are large enough to elicit elections by JCCI members.
Polls for those committees open on Saturday and voting will take place for five days. With 62 contestants, the fight for the Real Estate and Urban Development Committee will be the toughest, followed by the Contractors and Concrete Committee with 40 candidates.
The Foreign Investors Committee has 15 applicants. Candidates winning the last three positions in the voting for this committee will be eliminated,” the source said.
Mazen Batterjee, deputy chairman of JCCI, said the chamber would review the need for independent committees for which very few candidates wanted to contest.
“The JCCI will not shirk away from its responsibilities to any business sector, but some changes in the composition of such committees or their merger to other committees could be considered. But it will be done only after completing the elections and examining the number of candidates for each committee,” Batterjee said.
On the other hand, he attributed the low number of candidates for some committees to the lack of time of some businessmen to attend to the activities of the chamber.
Batterjee stressed the role of committee officials in implementing the developmental strategies of JCCI keeping pace with the developments in the economy.
“The most important duty of a committee is to overcome the issues that stand in the way of progress in the area which the committee represents and solve them with the help of related government departments,” he said.
He also pointed out the committees are responsible to organize forums, workshops, lectures, meetings, courses, delegations, exhibitions and opening websites that promote business activities.
