Press reports have said that a businessman, a real estate investor, a contractor and a former water department official would be among those facing trial.
Khaled Aqeel, deputy mayor of Jeddah, said he does not have any new information about the municipality officials who were held for questioning. He added work at the municipality has been affected as a result of the absence of a large number of officials.
A high-level committee set up by Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah under the chairmanship of Makkah Gov. Prince Khaled Al-Faisal had called more than 30 officials and businessmen for questioning. They were detained for up to 60 days.
After the committee presented its report to King Abdullah last week, some of the detainees were set free. Those freed included deputy mayors and senior managers at the municipality, a number of water department officials and some contractors.
Sources said those who have been released have not yet resumed their duties at the municipality.
They are waiting for higher authorities to give a date for their return to work and lift the ban on them traveling abroad. However, the sources expected a decision within a few days.
Meanwhile, Aqeel said a study on 79 plans for housing east of the Haramain Road has been completed.
The municipality carried out the study under the supervision of the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs.
