The battle was waged jointly by the Jordanian army and Palestinian guerrilla groups against Israeli forces which then crossed the River Jordan to chase Palestinian fighters who posed a danger to the Jewish state.
The battle’s significance stemmed from the fact that it was the first showdown between Israel and an Arab military after Israel seized the West Bank including East Jerusalem from Jordan in the 1967 Middle East war.
