The authority governing the Al-Maabdah district knocked down six slaughterhouses, three houses and six courtyards in the Jabal Al-Noor and Al-Sharaie residential areas.
More than 80 Makkah police officers worked with municipality staff in the campaign, the authority’s chairman Ahmad Manshi said.
He said the six slaughterhouses, which were being used to slaughter animals during the Haj and Umrah seasons, were not observing health rules or subjecting the animals to veterinary examination.
Manshi added that the owners of the houses and courtyards were warned more than two months ago to evacuate the buildings, but they did not heed the notices. He said that as it was usual for the encroachers to resist demolition of their buildings, so the municipality had asked the police department to send a large number of officers.
