Tax officials visit Indian cricket offices

IPL commissioner Lalat Modi confirmed the investigators were at the cricket board and IPL offices at Wankhede Stadium.
“It is only an enquiry, not a raid,” Modi said. “We will extend all possible cooperation to them.” Press Trust of India reported that Modi rushed to the cricket board headquarters after income tax officials came to check the accounts.
The Indian cricket board is the richest cricket organization in the world. It enjoys exemption from paying income tax, like other sports bodies. In recent years the tax department has sought to take away the exemption.
The IPL has been involved in an argument featuring Modi and a junior federal minister following the winning bid by a southern Indian city to join the league.
