On Sunday inspectors discovered 41 stores out of 146 (28 percent) in violation of selling used and expired tires to consumers. Among the violators were 19 stores whose violations were so egregious as to elicit fines.
"Our inspectors made surprise visits and found those shops selling expired and used tires sold in the open in clear disregard to codes and regulations," said Bashir Abu Najm, who is in charge of licensing and inspections for the municipality. "Some of these tires were in bad condition and a serious threat to people."
The sale of used tires is illegal because it can cause potentially fatal; accident-causing blowouts.
