It was the Americans’ second straight group stage victory, and they will play the Czech Republic for a spot in Saturday’s final.
After the teams split the singles matches on Tuesday, the Bryan twins beat Daniel Gimeno-Lopez and Marc Lopez 6-3, 7-5 to end Spain’s hopes of reaching the final.
Also in the Red Group, the Czechs beat Australia 2-1 after Tomas Berdych clinched the series with a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win over Carsten Ball.
Berdych had expected to face Lleyton Hewitt, who withdrew with a stomach problem. Berdych struggled against Ball and had to save eight of the nine break points he faced before closing out the match with an ace.
“You are just preparing all day to play Lleyton Hewitt, you get some tactics or whatever, strategy, and then just change it in the last moment,” Berdych said. “So, it was a quite tough one. He was playing well.”
In the Blue Group, France beat Serbia 2-1 and will play Argentina for a spot in the final. The Argentines overcame Germany by the same score, despite trailing 1-0 after Tuesday’s opening singles match.
Eduardo Schwank leveled the series by beating Germany’s Andreas Beck 7-6 (3), 2-6, 6-3, before Juan Monaco and Horacio Zeballos teamed to beat Christopher Kas and Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-2, 6-3 in the doubles.
Jeremy Chardy and Nicolas Mahut won the decisive doubles match for France by overcoming Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic 7-6 (4), 6-2.
The final round-robin matches will be played over two days, with the winner of each group advancing to the final.
In Nice, France, Olivier Rochus of Belgium rallied to upset top-seeded Robin Soderling 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 Wednesday and reach the quarterfinals of the Open de Nice.
Despite serving 15 aces, Soderling was broken three times.
Rochus, who reached his first quarterfinals of the season, will play either Richard Gasquet of France or Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine.
Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus also advanced with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Simon Greul of Germany after converting three of his five break point chances.
“I’m feeling good on court and I’m finding solutions to win,” Baghdatis said after giving up only nine points on his serve. “I’m clever on court, and I’m happy with that.”
Baghdatis will face Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, who beat Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil 6-4, 6-1 to avenge a loss in Rome last month.
Potito Starace of Italy ousted Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 6-4.
In Strasbourg, France, top-seeded Maria Sharapova cruised into the quarterfinals of the Strasbourg International with a 6-3, 6-0 win Wednesday over qualifier Dia Evtimova.
Sharapova, given a wild-card entry after being sidelined two months with a right elbow injury, didn’t face a single break point to claim her second win on clay this year.
Sharapova lost in the first round in Madrid last week.
Sharapova will face Julia Goerges of Germany, who defeated sixth-seeded Sybille Bammer of Austria 6-1, 7-6 (6).
American Vania King, a doubles specialist who won her sole singles title in Bangkok in 2006, broke Frenchwoman Alize Cornet five times in a 6-3, 6-2 win.
King will face Anastasia Rodionova of Australia, who advanced when Elena Baltacha of Britain retired while leading 2-1 in the first set.
Three-time tournament winner Anabel Madinah Garrigues of Spain also advanced when Lucie Hradecka retired. Madinah Garrigues was leading 6-4, 3-0 when Hradecka quit with a wrist injury.
Kristina Barrois of Germany defeated Yvonne Meusburger of Austria 7-5, 6-3.
In Warsaw, Poland, Elena Dementieva was upset by Bulgarian qualifier Tsvetana Pironkova 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at the Warsaw Open on Wednesday, her third straight early round exit on clay.
Dementieva, a former French Open finalist, received a bye into the second round. She has only two wins at three tournaments in her buildup to the French Open, which starts Sunday.
The 100th-ranked Pironkova will play Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, who defeated Timea Bacsinsky of Switzerland 6-2, 6-4.
In other second-round matches, third-seeded Li Na of China defeated wild-card Katarzyna Piter of Poland 6-0, 6-3. Li will play Sara Errani of Italy, who defeated Magdalena Rybarikova of Slovakia 7-6 (7), 6-3.
Zheng Jie of China cruised past Tathiana Garbin of Italy 6-1, 6-1, and will face top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the quarterfinals.
Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of the Czech Republic 6-2, 6-4, while Greta Arn of Hungary defeated Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic, 6-4, 6-4. They will meet in the quarterfinals.
