Civil Defense spokesman Capt. Abdul Rahman Saeed Al-Ghamdi said the Civil Defense received a report about the fire at 9:17 a.m. and dispatched two firefighting units, a rescue team and an ambulance to the scene.
He said when the members of the Civil Defense arrived at the scene, they discovered that the door to the room was locked from the outside and they had to break open the door.
Inside they found the three children huddled dead in a corner of the room with severe burns. The single-room apartment had no windows, the captain added. Al-Ghamdi warned all parents not to leave children alone at home when they go out.
