“The municipality will be careful not to allow stagnant water to amass anywhere within its boundaries in future,” he said. “The municipality undertakes the filling of places of stagnant water in order to guarantee that all locations of mosquito breeding are destroyed.”
The danger of stagnant water lies in the fact that mosquitoes that spread blood-borne viral infections, such as dengue fever, use the still warm water to breed. People living in close proximity to standing water face a greater chance of acquiring diseases like dengue and malaria from the blood-sucking insects.
The chairman added that the filling of the locations of stagnant water begins with identifying such locations and then filling them. Places where water is likely to gather are also filled, he added.
He said if the place is located in a private property, the owner is asked to fill it.
Abdullah Al-Ajami, director of monitoring department in the municipality, said the spots of stagnant water that were filled were located on the Imam Malik Street in Rawdah district, Prince Sultan Road close to Al-Salam Hospital in Al-Zahra district and behind Al-Buyutat Co. in Al-Salamah district.
