Hermann Jaeger of Milchwerke Jaeger in Bavaria told the AP Tuesday there have been complaints about only around ten mozzarella balls exported to Italy — out of a production of 800,000 a day.
He says a harmless germ often found in ground water was identified as the problem in mid-May and has since been filtered out of the water used in production.
Jaeger says there have been no problems since and he is surprised that Italian authorities confiscated 70,000 mozzarella balls in Turin over the weekend.
He says the cheese has since been tested in Italy and is fine.
