Nine dead in truck accident

Police said six tons of liquefied gas ignited after a cargo truck crashed into an electricity pole and parked car, spilling gas canisters onto a bonfire beside the roadside diner in the town of Carmona south of Manila. Police said there were nine dead, updating their earlier toll of eight. Local television reports said at least four were members of the family that owned the restaurant and three other people who worked at the diner. The accident took place as the fuel truck was overtaking a slower vehicle, police said. Two of the cargo truck’s crew were arrested but the driver and one of his assistants fled.
