Al-Zawawi said his family read Asharq Al-Awsat daily while in the Kingdom and abroad.
“When I received a call from Mr. Mubarak Al-Ghamdi saying I had won the prize, I thought it was just a joke. But when he called me thrice I realized that he was serious,” he said.
Al-Zawawi was entered into the draw to win the car when he responded to the newspaper’s subscription campaign on the advice of his son Hassan. He said the prize reflected the credibility of the newspaper, which is published by one of the largest publishing companies in the world.
“Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper is available in almost all parts of the world. It has got a lot of good writers and reporters. It has special pages for political, economic, cultural and sports affairs. It has become one of the essentials of life.”
During its subscription campaign, Asharq Al-Awsat had been giving a BMW car every week and a BMW 3 Series car every month.
The prize has traveled to Riyadh five times, to Jeddah three times, and once to Makkah, Yanbu, Khafji, Al-Ahsa, Tabuk, Jubail, Hail and Dammam.
