The Padres took two of three games in the series, opening
a seven-game gap between them. The California rivals will meet again in a
four-game series at Dodger Stadium starting Monday.
Scott Hairston started the winning rally with a single
down the left-field line off George Sherrill (1-2). He was sacrificed to second
and, with one out, Salazar hit a full-count pitch up the middle past the diving
second baseman for the winner.
San Diego's Heath Bell (5-0) pitched a perfect ninth for
the win.
In San Francisco, Anibal Sanchez
pitched his first shutout since 2006 as Florida blanked San Francisco in its
own park.
Sanchez (8-6) retired his first 13 batters and matched a
career-high with eight strikeouts.
Jorge Cantu played his final game for Florida, having
been traded to Texas.
Giants rookie Buster Posey had his hitting streak snapped
at 21 games, one shy of tying Hall of Famer Willie McCovey's San Francisco
rookie record, set in 1959.
Giants' rookie Madison Bumgarner (4-3) had a four-start
winning streak snapped.
In New York, R.A. Dickey pitched
more than eight scoreless innings as New York beat St. Louis to record its
first series victory in more than a month.
Working on three days' rest, Dickey (7-4) showed no sign
of the sore left hip that prompted manager Jerry Manuel to pull the
knuckleballer out of a game on Sunday.
Ike Davis hit a three-run homer for the Mets, who dropped
the Cardinals into second place in the NL Central.
St. Louis' Blake Hawksworth (4-7) gave up Davis' homer in
the third.
In Washington, Scott Olsen
returned from the disabled list to win his first appearance in more than two
months, guiding Washington past Atlanta.
Olsen (3-2) gave up two earned runs in six innings before
a thunderstorm caused a 90-minute delay.
Adam Dunn and Ian Desmond each homered and doubled for
the Nationals.
Backup catcher Wil Nieves bounced a single up the middle
off Derek Lowe (10-9) in the fourth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie.
In Philadelphia,
Wilson Valdez's RBI single with one out in the 11th inning lifted Philadelphia
to its eighth straight win, edging Arizona.
After the Diamondbacks tied it in the ninth, the Phillies
rallied against Esmerling Vasquez (1-4) in the 11th.
The Phillies closed within 21/2 games of division-leading
Atlanta. They have made up 41/2 games in the past week.
Jose Contreras (5-3) tossed a scoreless 11th for the win.
Hours before the first pitch, the Phillies improved their
chances at winning a fourth straight NL East title by acquiring three-time
All-Star pitcher Roy Oswalt from Houston. He is scheduled to start at
Washington on Friday.
In Denver, Ubaldo Jimenez rebounded
from two rough starts to pitch seven effective innings and end Colorado's
eight-game losing skid with victory over Pittsburgh.
Jimenez (16-2) returned to the form that earned him a
start in the All-Star game. He allowed one run and struck out six to move
within a win of tying the franchise record for wins.
Carlos Gonzalez and Brad Hawpe homered and Clint Barmes
had two hits and three RBIs for the Rockies.
Pirates starter Paul Maholm (6-9) gave up eight runs in 5
1-3 innings.
