Phillips stars in Reds’ 2-1 victory over Braves

Ramon Hernandez was on first when Phillips lifted a fly ball down the right-field line that eluded a diving Jason Heyward and bounced into the corner. Orlando Cabrera followed with a routine grounder to Gonzalez, but the former Reds infielder dropped the ball, and Phillips scored while Cabrera easily beat the throw to first.
 The NL East-leading Braves have lost three of four and went 3-6 on their 10-day trip. They wasted a solid outing by Tommy Hanson (8-8), who allowed an earned run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings.
Edinson Volquez (2-1) pitched five innings for the Reds and Francisco Cordero got three outs for his 29th save.
Phillies 6 Nationals 4, 11 innings: At Washington, Placido Polanco and Jayson Werth each drove in a run in the 11th inning, helping Philadelphia avoid the sweep.
Wilson Valdez led off the 11th with a bunt single against Collin Balester (0-1) and was sacrificed to second by pinch-hitter Roy Oswalt , the ace pitcher acquired Thursday in a trade with Houston. Valdez went to third on a fly ball by Jimmy Rollins and scored on Polanco’s third hit, a single to center.
Werth followed with an RBI double.
The Phillies lost the first two games of the series to the last-place Nationals but managed to avoid their first sweep against Washington.
Jose Contreras (6-3) got the win and Brad Lidge earned his 11th save in 15 opportunities.
Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard left with a sprained left ankle in the first inning and left fielder Raul Ibanez missed the game with a sore left wrist.
Padres 5  Marlins 4: At San Diego,   Jerry Hairston Jr. hit a two-run double with two outs in the sixth inning to chase Florida ace Josh Johnson , and the Padres avoided a three-game sweep.
Newly acquired Ryan Ludwick came up big during the three-run rally, delivering a pinch-hit single and sliding in ahead of the throw after Hairston doubled over left fielder Logan Morrison’s head.
San Diego right-hander Jon Garland (10-7) outpitched Johnson (10-4), allowing three runs and five hits in six innings.
Johnson gave up seven hits and a season-high five runs in 5 2-3 innings. His major league-leading ERA rose from 1.72 to 1.96.
Heath Bell allowed Morrison’s RBI single with two outs in the ninth before retiring Gaby Sanchez with runners on first and third for his 30th save in 33 chances.
Cardinals 9  Pirates 1: At St. Lois, Albert Pujols hit a two-run homer and Adam Wainwright stayed unbeaten at home with seven strong innings for the Cardinals.
Pujols’ 25th homer capped a five-run fifth inning.
Wainwright (15-6) allowed one earned run and six hits, bouncing back strong from one of his worst outings of the season. He improved to 11-0 at Busch Stadium with a 1.22 ERA, both major league bests.
Wainwright also hit a tiebreaking RBI single off Zach Duke in the fifth.
Matt Holliday also homered for St. Louis, which outscored Pittsburgh 21-2 in sweeping the three-game series.
Duke (5-10) gave up six runs and seven hits in five innings.
Diamondbacks 14  Mets 1: At New York, Adam LaRoche hit a pair of three-run homers and Daniel Hudson made a memorable debut for Arizona.
Stephen Drew and John Hester added back-to-back homers as the Diamondbacks wrapped up a dominating season series against New York.
Rockies 8 Cubs 7: At Denver, Jorge De La Rosa pitched into the seventh inning to earn his first win in three months and Colorado earned its fourth consecutive victory.
Chicago scored three times in the ninth against Huston Street but Jeff Baker struck out to end the game. Rockies center fielder Dexter Fowler was carted off the field with bruised ribs and a bruised left hip after crashing into the wall while catching Alfonso Soriano’s sacrifice fly.
De La Rosa (4-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings to pick up his first win since April 25 against Florida. He also went 2 for 2 at the plate.
Astros 5 Brewers 2: At Houston, pinch-hitter Jason Michaels connected for a grand slam in the seventh inning and Houston completed the three-game sweep.
The Astros trailed 2-0 before Michaels’ drive to the first row of the Crawford Boxes in left field.
Houston has won five straight games while Milwaukee has dropped its last five.
Brewers starter Randy Wolf was cruising before he was hit on his left wrist by Hunter Pence’s single with none out in the seventh, forcing the left-hander out of the game. He was replaced by Kameron Loe (1-2), who walked Carlos Lee and Chris Johnson to load the bases before Zach Braddock took over.
That set up Michaels’ second career pinch-hit grand slam.
Giants 2  Dodgers 0: At San Francisco, Matt Cain pitched four-hit ball into the eighth inning, earning his first career win against the Dodgers as the Giants completed a three-game sweep.
Edgar Renteria hit a two-run triple in the sixth for San Francisco, which moved to 8-2 in its last 10 games.
Cain (9-8) allowed four hits in 7 2-3 innings, improving to 3-0 with a 1.52 ERA in his last four starts. The right-hander also raised his career record against San Francisco’s longtime rival to 1-8 with a 3.94 ERA in 15 games.
