In the afternoon, it is commonplace to see hungry and thirsty men roaming the various lanes to buy food and drink for iftar, while in the evening women take to the streets for their shopping sprees.
The men would go during the late afternoon to shops that sell the famous Ramadan drink sobia, as well as ful, falafel and tamiz. They would also look for fruit and vegetables.
The sobia drink is a favorite of Saudis during the fasting month and is sold at SR5 per liter.
The men also like to buy popular food such as Mento and Yaghmish in addition to famous Yemeni dishes including Seltah, Fahsah and porridge.
Binladin Street in Jeddah is famous for its sweet shops selling kunafah and baqalawah. It also has a number of liver and falafel restaurants.
This street is teeming with men looking for food and drink to buy before iftar. They also come to the area as it has many shops selling car accessories.
Streets with shops selling furniture and dresses are not usually busy during the day. However, it is a different story in the evening when women shoppers come out.
Al-Jamieh Street in Jeddah, which extends from Binladin Street to the Old Makkah Road has more than 2,000 fashion shops. Unsurprisingly, they are popular with women.
It is common to see women in large numbers along Palestine Street, which has more than 200 shops selling mobile phones. The Al-Safa district is another favorite for women with its multitude of gold shops. It has large malls selling clothes for women and children.
