Healthlines: Getting into a good routine

Whatever you decide is a good way to start to lose weight, recognize that it is not easy to change the habits of a lifetime and that it will take time and planning and only you can decide what will work for your body.
Start by planning your day on paper.  Writing your decisions down is a good way of imprinting your decisions on your brain. Decide what you will eat for each of three meals in your day and allow for two small snacks as well. This way you have meals to look forward to in your day. Planning is an intelligent way to eat. People often think to themselves, “I’ll skip breakfast to lose weight”, but what happens then is that at half-past-ten they’ll feel starved and grab a chocolate bar or a doughnut.  It is smart to eat three sensible meals for energy and a healthy body. When you take care of your body’s needs sensibly it is a sign that you value your good health.

Why am I eating this biscuit?
Do I really need a biscuit?
Am I hungry?
Will I regret eating this biscuit?
Will eating this biscuit lead to eating two, three or even four more?
Will eating this biscuit make me feel happier about my job, husband or bad day?
Is food fulfilling an emotional need?
Never, ever eat because you are bored — drink fruit juice if you must have something in your mouth and eat low fat foods.
It is reasonable to have snacks. Plan to have a banana or an apple and take one with you to work so that you don’t find yourself caught in the hunger zone and reaching for something quick but junky. It is perfectly acceptable to have a couple of biscuits or a treat once — and to really enjoy it. If you know there is a box of chocolates or cake you won’t be able to resist at home, don’t buy it. Base your meals on carbohydrates, protein and vegetables. Eat a proper balanced meal that will carry you through until the next meal
You feel so good and virtuous after exercising but it is so easy to spoil all your efforts by deciding that you deserve a scrummy treat. To avoid this, always take an apple and a bottle of water with you. An apple a day really does have great health benefits as well as staving off a snack attack it can help lower your cholesterol.
