In a statement on Monday, SFDA said the warning was issued in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure that the product did not enter the Kingdom.
The prohibited items include Similac infant powder packed in plastic and metal bottles. SFDA said the presence of such insects or larvae does not directly affect health but may cause discomfort in infants as a result of consumption.
As a voluntary measure, Similac manufacturer Abbott withdrew on Wednesday certain products in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries.
Abbott was recalling these products following an internal quality review, which detected the remote possibility of the presence of a small common beetle in powder manufactured at a single factory.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that while the formula containing the beetles poses no immediate health risk, there is a possibility that infants who consume it could experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomfort and could refuse to eat.
If these symptoms persist for more than a few days, a physician should be consulted, the FDA said in a statement. The recall includes certain Similac lines contained in eight ounce, 12.4 ounce and 12.9 ounce cans.
