“We’ve been receiving a lot of tip-offs on our toll free number (6425550) about crimes. Based on these telephone calls over the last week, we set up a task force to raid various places across the city, including in the Baghdadiah, Ruwais, Hindawiya, Sharafiah, Faisaliah, Safah and Marwa areas of the city,” he said.
Those arrested have been involved in petty crime, bootlegging, car theft, fraud, bribery, harboring of undocumented workers and opening shops without licenses.
“We also found 565 male and female undocumented workers in these very areas. We’ve collated a lot of evidence and even retrieved a lot of stolen items,” said Al-Bouq.
“We are keeping a close eye on any criminal activity in the city, and the police will not relent in pursuing criminals and those who harbor criminals, acts which threaten the Kingdom’s security,” said Maj. Gen. Ali Muhammad Al-Ghamdi, director of Jeddah police, who oversaw the raids.
Al-Ghamdi praised members of the public for reporting crimes and for being courageous. “We hope to see further cooperation between the police and members of the public,” he added.
