Police spokesman Lt. Saleem Al-Rabeie said the Burmese man had been distributing brochures, offering to perform the pilgrimage for people unable to do so for SR2,000 each. He particularly targeted the elderly.
Police received reports of the man’s suspicious activities as he distributed his leaflets at a number of mosques. Officers said he was breaking the law because he could not perform Haj on behalf of more than one person.
Meanwhile, a Pakistani was also arrested in Taif for charging people SR2,000 each to perform Haj for them. The man confessed to taking money from more than one person.
Police warned against the suspicious activities of those who aim to con residents out of their money, without actually performing Haj.
