Four leading prison guard unions called Monday for protests and blockades around the country against budgetary restrictions.
Local CGT secretary Khalid Belyamani says the guards in Marseille must watch over prisoners in hospitals and carry out transfers and escorts without enough resources to do so.
The unions fear closure of some facilities.
Stephane Serve, speaking for union FO-Penitentiaire, says they are waiting for new Justice Minister Michel Mercier to re-establish social dialogue. Mercier was named Sunday night in a government reshuffle.
