Officials from the Islamist movement Hamas, which rules the coastal territory, said the car had been targeted by an Israeli air strike. An Israeli military spokesman said she was checking the report.
Medical officials identified the dead as a senior member of the Army of Islam, a group whose agenda of global jihad, or holy war, is shared with Al-Qaeda.
The Army of Islam is a rival to Hamas, but the groups joined forces in the 2006 cross-border abduction of an Israeli soldier. The alliance has not endured. Israel targeted an Army of Islam militant in a strike earlier this month.
