Police Superintendent Felipe Lafuente says protesters threw bottles and stones at officers trying to clear about 100 tricycles that the drivers used to barricade one of Manila’s busiest streets on Wednesday. Traffic was snarled for hours.
Lafuente and radio reports say at least one officer and a bystander have been injured and several protesters arrested.
The ban follows numerous complaints of congestion caused by tricycles. The ubiquitous motorcycle taxis are fitted with a side car to carry passengers.
The drivers say the government is depriving them of their livelihood.
