Spokesman Adrian Edwards said Tuesday that some 6,000 people have fled to Liberia while 200 others have gone to Guinea.
UNHCR says emergency supplies are being airlifted to help up to 30,000 people, but that number is only a planning figure.
Over the weekend the UN said it had received hundreds of reports of Ivorians being abducted from their homes at night and that 50 people had been killed.
The UN says Alassane Ouattara won the presidential election, but Laurent Gbagbo is refusing to concede defeat and step down. Gbagbo ordered UN peacekeepers to leave the country but the UN has extended their mandate through June.
