International Qur’an contest to open at Grand Mosque

Minister of Islamic Affairs Saleh Al-Asheikh will open the event, which is to be held for the first time inside the Grand Mosque. The minister commended the government’s support for the contest, which is aimed at encouraging Muslim youth to learn the Qur’an.
The contests are held in five categories. Twenty-one contestants will take part in the first category (memorization of the entire Qur’an with tajwid and explanation of the meanings of words) and 49 in the second (memorization of the whole Qur’an with tajwid).
In the third category (memorization of 20 parts of the Qur’an with tajwid) there will be 49 contestants while in the fourth (memorization of 10 parts with tajwid) there will be 51 and in the fifth (memorization of five parts with tajwid) 18. The last category is restricted to Islamic societies and organizations in non-Muslim countries.
The ministry has allocated a total SR888,000 for cash prizes to winners. The first-prize winner in the first category will get SR75,000 while the second and third prize winners will get SR72,000 and SR69,000 respectively. The fourth-prize winner will receive SR66,000 and fifth prize winner SR63,000.
In the second category the first five winners will receive SR55,000, SR52,000, SR49,000, SR46,000 and SR43,000 respectively. In the third SR40,000, SR37,000, SR34,000, SR31,000 and SR28,000. In the fourth SR25,000, SR22,000, SR19,000, SR16,000 and SR13,000. Winners of the fifth category will receive SR10,000, SR8,000, SR6,000, SR5,000 and SR4,000.
Participants will also get an opportunity to perform Umrah and visit the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah and important Islamic institutions such the Kaaba Cover Factory and King Fahd Qur’an Printing Complex in Madinah.
In another development, Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh opened a meeting of the Islamic Jurisprudence Council of the Muslim World League in Makkah. During the meeting, experts will discuss a number of contemporary social, commercial and financial issues to give their opinion in an Islamic perspective.
