The 12-story, 193-room Hotel Niagara opened in 1925 and has had
several owners, most recently Houston-based Amidee Hotel Niagara. The company
filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Texas last September, two years after buying
the hotel for $4.6 million and closing it for renovations that were never
completed. The hotel is located near the famous waterfalls. It's viewed by
local officials as a key parcel in ongoing efforts to revitalize the downtown
district.
Newspaper reports say Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio
stayed at the hotel during the filming of «Niagara» in 1952. The auction was
held Thursday at City Hall.
