“The integrated system will solve difficulties with current regulations governing building contracts that impede progress in the Kingdom’s construction sector,” said Salamah.
She stressed the need for restructuring the contracting market, which has become more pressing particularly after the vulnerability of buildings and roads in Jeddah to floods has become evident.
“There is a pressing need for re-engineering the contracting sector and increased awareness among people on the type of homes they should choose and how an ideal contractor should be selected so that the client gets what he actually wants. The integrated system would also be of great help to the municipal departments issuing building permits,” she added.
Salamah said the arbitrariness that prevails in the contracting sector should be regulated not only for huge projects but for middle level and small contractors as well.
“We will also focus on medium and small contractors because they are the link between the large contractors and society. It is the small contractors who interact with the common people,” she said.
In November, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs approved a series of executive bylaws to grade contractors.
