Burrows, who also scored Vancouver’s first goal of the game, backhanded the puck past Antti Niemi’s glove, atoning for a holding-the-stick penalty late in regulation that led to Ryan Clowe’s tying goal for San Jose.
The teams combined for three goals in the final 2:13 of regulation, with Clowe tying it on a power play with 21 seconds left and Niemi off for an extra attacker.
Clowe also scored in the second period.
Daniel Sedin had a power-play goal with 1:49 left and also assisted on Burrows’ goal in NHL-leading Vancouver’s fourth straight victory — all on the road. Sedin has 35 goals and 51 assists for a career-high 86 points in 69 games this season.
Sami Salo and Mason Raymond also scored for the Canucks, 11 points ahead of second-place Detroit in the Western Conference and 12 ahead of third-place San Jose.
Torrey Mitchell tied it at 3 for San Jose with 2:13 left, splitting a pair of defenders and flicking the puck past Schneider for his first goal since Dec. 16.
In Boston, Brad Boyes scored 3:44 into overtime and Buffalo came back from two deficits to beat Boston and move into a seventh-place tie with the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference.
The Bruins lost their third straight game after winning seven in a row. It was their first since a 4-1 loss in Montreal on Tuesday night in which the Canadiens’ Max Pacioretty sustained a severe concussion and a cracked vertebra when hit by Zdeno Chara. Boston’s captain was penalized but not suspended by the NHL and Montreal police began a criminal investigation Thursday.
Boston goalie Tim Thomas stopped Nathan Gerbe’s shot from 30 feet but lost sight of the puck. Gerbe retrieved it just to the right of Thomas and passed across the crease to an unguarded Boyes, who tapped it in.
Boston squandered leads of 2-0 in the second period and 3-2 in the third.
In St. Louis, Jaroslav Halak made 27 saves in his first game against his former Montreal teammates to help St. Louis beat the Canadiens.
Montreal was playing its first game without left winger Max Pacioretty, out indefinitely with a severe concussion and fractured fourth vertebrae as a result of a check Tuesday night at the hands of Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara. Pacioretty was released from the hospital Thursday.
In Toronto, Brian Boucher made 27 saves and Claude Giroux’s second-period goal stood up as the winner in Philadelphia’s victory over Toronto.
Andrej Meszaros and Darroll Powe also scored for Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia, playing without top defenseman Chris Pronger because of an undisclosed upper-body injury.
Mikhail Grabovski and Joffrey Lupul scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs have lost three straight, hurting their bid to climb into playoff position.
At a time when questionable hits have dominated discussion around the NHL, referees Mike Leggo and Brian Pochmara came down hard on Toronto defenseman Mike Komisarek.
In Glendale, Arizona, Ilya Bryzgalov made 39 saves for his sixth shutout of the season and 22nd overall in Phoenix’s victory over Calgary.
Phoenix moved into a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with Calgary and Chicago, winning for the first time in regulation since beating Nashville 3-2 on Feb. 19.
Rookie Brett MacLean scored in the second period, and Eric Belanger added a goal in the third, and captain Shane Doan had an empty-netter with 1:56 remaining.
The Flames lost for only the second time in 12 games.
In Sunrise, Florida, defenseman Erik Karlsson scored twice in the final 8:48 for Ottawa and former Florida backup Craig Anderson stopped 33 shots.
Anderson came within 4:13 of his second shutout since being acquired from Colorado on Feb. 18.
Defenseman Clay Wilson scored for Florida.
Early in the third period, Ottawa killed a 5-minute Florida power play after Francis Lessard was given a major and game misconduct for leaving his feet and checking Scott Timmins in the head area.
In Nashville, Tennessee, Pekka Rinne stopped 19 shots for sixth shutout of the season for Nashville and the third of his career against Minnesota.
Nick Spaling scored two goals, and Joel Ward and Martin Erat each had a goal and assist for Nashville in the first game of a five-game homestand.
