High Commissioner Fergus Cochrane-Dyet, Britain’s top envoy to the southern African country, has been told to leave after he made critical comments about Malawi’s record on human rights.
Malawi’s charge d’affaires in London was summoned to the Foreign Office on Tuesday and was told Cochrane-Dyet’s expulsion would be unacceptable.
The Foreign Office said in a statement that the official was told “there were likely to be consequences affecting the full range of issues in the bilateral relationship.” Britain’s foreign ministry says it is still waiting for written confirmation of the envoy’s expulsion.
